TIG welding in the outdoors : why to choose orbital welding ?

Working outdoors exposes the welder to climatic conditions that can sometimes prove to be difficult. The process of manual TIG welding shows its limitations when the rain and wind are disturbing factors.

Climatic conditions with major consequences

TIG welding relies heavily on the welder’s skills and know-how, and its efficiency is also linked to the working conditions. In some situations, the environment where the welder must perform extremely complicates his task and may even put him in danger. Confined environments, for example, pose the risk of suffocation, electric shock, or fire, among other things. Similarly, in damp environments or when it rains, the welder is also exposed to the risk of electric shock. Welding in the wind poses enormous problems with the process of welding itself. In fact, TIG welding requires the presence of a gas. In particular, it prevents the molten metal from oxidizing. The wind disrupts this gas protection and affects the quality of the weld. It may be porous and therefore potentially dangerous.

 

Choose orbital welding by automation 

When climatic conditions or the work area do not allow the welder to work effectively, automation seems like an adequate solution. In confined or damp environments, after being set, the welding machine operates without the need for specialized labor. In the end, the quality of automated welding looks better than that obtained manually in these difficult conditions.

 

Closed head welding: a solution
against poor weather conditions

Ideally, it is best to avoid welding in the wind or rain. But sometimes time constraints force us to keep working to meet deadlines. Closed head welding is an excellent solution to keep the work going regardless of weather conditions.

This process secures the welding area and isolated the gas and the welding electrode from the external environment.

 

Several precautions are needed when welding in bad weather

  • First and foremost, ensuring the welder’s safety is of utmost importance. He should wear adequate protection.
  • Create a protected work area, by putting up a windscreen for example.
  • Opt for automation when conditions are unfavorable for manual welding.
  • Choose a closed head orbital welding process, so that the welding can take place in good conditions.

Orbital welding has a double advantage in the presence of adverse weather conditions. First, it allows the welder to obtain very high quality results in windy conditions. And in addition, it ensures the welder’s safety.
